There is an insistent tapping that brings me out of a deep sleep, and when I open my eyes, itâs still dark outside. I donât know who the fuck is knocking on my door so goddamned early in the morning after a concert, but Iâm ready to commit murder when I roll out of bed and stomp over to the door and throw it open. When I see Dylan standing there looking so handsome and well put together, my anger quickly dissipates.
âSorry to wake you,â Dylan whispers, a frown of reluctance and worry on his face. âbut I didnât want to leave without telling you goodbye in person.â
âI thought you didnât fly out until tonight.â
âThat was the plan, but I have to take an earlier flight back to Chicago.â The tension in his voice is apparent. âMy mom took a spill down the basement stairs last night; she didnât think it warranted a hospital visit, but my dad insisted she go this morning. He just called me from the hospital. He thinks somethingâs broken.â
âIâm so sorry.â Even though my relationship with Jacob is fraught as fuck, I couldnât imagine what Iâd be going through if he were hurt and I couldnât get to him immediately. âDo you need me to give you a ride to the airport?â
âBrodyâs got me covered,â he reminds me. âI wasnât waking you to ask you for a favor. I wanted to let you know before I left, so you didnât thinkâ¦â
âSo I didnât think you were ghosting me again?â Regrettably, I have to admit that the thought would have occurred to me if he just hadnât been here when I got up, and had been a no-show for our brunch. I wouldnât call it a date. It was just a couple of friends getting together while in the same zip code.
âYeah.â He sounds sheepish at my honest reply.
While we were keeping things as chill as possible, if he ran off on me again with no word, the way he had before, I wouldnât just be pissed. I would be downright ragey, not to mention the emotional bruising my psyche would undergo again.
I am thankful that heâs so thoughtful despite his departure being precipitated by a family emergency. I hope that should our friendship end this time, it would happen with open communication and mutual respect, but I couldnât quite trust that would happen in my current frame of mind.
He clears his throat. âI was going to ask you if I could have a raincheck when weâre in the Maldives. I know weâre both bringing dates, but we could have a meal together there a time or two, as friends. Right?â
âWeâll see. Text me when you get things with your mother sorted, okay?â I reach up and hug his neck, my height deficit making me have to raise up onto my tip-toes.
âI will. Thanks.â The sharp edge of emotion in those three words makes my heart ache for him. He lost a great uncle less than a year ago, and to have a scare with his Mom so soon after is really untenable.
